Don’t let this opportunity go to waste

Cust at Resene StoreEconomic prosperity in the last 20 years has dramatically increased the amount of waste being generated.  Waste is a significant risk to human health and the environment, and tangible evidence that we are making inefficient use of resources.

Hundreds of products make our lives easier... until we don’t need them anymore. Then, if they’re not disposed of responsibly they become a danger to our health and the environment.

Most of the companies who design and sell the products you buy have no responsibility for disposal or recycling of the product when it reaches the end of its useful life. In some cases products are actually designed for disposal. Local recycling strategies are not enough to reduce the tons of waste disposed of in landfill in New Zealand each year. New Zealand local authorities spend millions of dollars a year collecting and properly managing household hazardous products alone.  It’s time to consider a change which shifts some of the responsibility onto the producers of products. It’s time for Product Stewardship or extended producer responsibility. Product Stewardship is a 'cradle to cradle' methodology that helps reduce the amount of waste by encouraging better design and manufacture.  It also facilitates efficient and effective resource use at the end of the products lifecycle.

The new waste minimisation bill,  changing consumer attitudes to waste  and other environmental issues means that there has never been a better time to think differently about resource use.

Waste disposal cost increases are one of the fastest growing expenses for businesses and communities throughout New Zealand. When was the last time anyone announced a reduction in landfill disposal fees? Never! The new waste bill will add $10.00 per tonne to the existing cost of waste disposal from July 09 and in future probably much more.

We currently operate under two completely separate and disconnected systems: one system designs, manufactures and sells products to us but has no responsibility for the disposal of the product made. The other, local governments and their ratepayers, become financially responsible for managing the disposal of these goods, many of which can be toxic. These two systems don’t communicate with each other much. Local governments don’t have any input into how toxic or durable products are, and manufacturers don’t have to design creative and safe ways to dispose of products at the end of their useful life.  These systems however are changing and producers are increasingly being held responsible for their products through to the end of their life.

Can your business afford a do nothing attitude?   We don’t think so. Waste and resource recovery represents both Challenge and Opportunity.
