What is Product Stewardship?

Product Stewardship (PS) has been described as the most significant development in environmental regulation in recent years and is a substantial focus of our work in New Zealand and now Australia. PS enables “brand owners” to take responsibility for managing the environmental impacts of products through their lifecycle.

Research shows that there is a growing market of consumers who are prepared to reward brands which “do the right thing”. In a recent survey, over two thirds of people polled said they would buy a product in a product stewardship programme over one which was not.   Just under half said that they would do this even if the product was slightly more expensive.

At the same time governments in New Zealand and Australia are developing regulations to support stewardship approaches. Can business really afford a “do nothing” policy? We don’t think so!

Product Stewardship represents both Challenge and Opportunity for businesses and 3R is committed to developing innovative and workable solutions in New Zealand Australia.  The concept of Product Stewardship (PS) within New Zealand is relatively new but there is a growing awareness amongst consumers and business that taking a whole life approach to products that are made and consumed makes sense.

Under Product Stewardship schemes producers, brand owners, importers, retailers, consumers and other parties accept responsibility for the environmental effects of their products - from the time they are produced until the end of their useful life.

A product stewardship approach can represent an added-value opportunity through increased customer loyalty to a brand, not only from the "feel good" factor of supporting a manufacture who recognises it's environmental responsibilities but also by providing a solution to the problem of how to dispose of those awkward products, such as paint, computers and chemical containers.

With the help of 3R, innovative New Zealand companies have already seen the benefit of taking a stewardship approach.

Resene PaintWise paint and paint packaging take-back programme and the Agrecovery Rural Recycling programme are good examples of stewardship in action in New Zealand.  Both of these programmes have been designed and are now managed by 3R.
